Holiday Casual with Haute Style

While some of us are lucky enough to have the opportunity to get all glammed up for holiday parties and galas, others just need something stylish to wear to more casual holiday gatherings, like family dinners or office luncheons. With this in mind, I wanted to share this plus size fashion look featuring Point Zero Curvy that I styled on a gorgeous plus size model you may already know, Caterina.

She’s wearing the Crochet Lace Sleeves Plus Size Blouse and Side Lace Print Plus Size Leggings. The crochet lace detail on the blouse steps the casual level up a notch making it a lovely option for the festive season, and beyond.

The side slits make it easy to wear and add a bit of sexiness to this relatively modest top, showing a hint of your hips.

Pairing it with the Side Lace Print Leggings was another way to add interest to an all-black outfit. The lace print detail is sassy but still subtle enough to compliment, rather than compete, with the lace detail of the blouse. The are super soft, comfy and stretchy. They also have a natural high waist that accommodates a fuller behind and won’t slide down.

The crochet lace detail on the top continues across the shoulders in back which is a nice detail that Point Zero Curvy always considers in their designs.

It’s an easy to wear, dramatic look like the title of this post: Holiday Casual with Haute Style.

The final touch to this look were the amazing wide calf boots, called the Debbie style by ‘Boots by Pamela’ brand. With a medium but sexy heel, cocoon style with buckle detailing, they’re the perfect manageable heel in a wide calf boot that I’ve seen this year.

Special thanks to Caterina for modelling this look for my blog!

How to Wear A Coatigan as a Top

Well, despite the intriguing title suggesting some elaborate secret technique, it’s actually so simple I’m almost embarrassed to say….

Just belt it.

I defined what a coatigan is in my previous post, and when I was putting this look together, with the help of plus size blogger and stylist Annika of The Stylish Reid, I didn’t feel like wearing a top. Straight up. So she suggested belting it and it totally works. Sometimes you just don’t feel like coordinating and layering.

You just want to be comfortable, look good and go.

And that’s what this look is all about.

This gorgeous Fall look is by one of my new all-time fav brands, Point Zero Curvy. A well established Canadian brand who recently embraced the plus size market with their Curvy line. And I love it. The pieces are everyday wearable, and they’re anything but basic. Each piece, although casual, has some cool detail that just makes it special.

Annika selected a basic wide black belt and we pulled the coatigan tight to wrap over my bosom. This would have been totally appropriate for a casual office look, but would also work for delightful weekend window shopping, while slowly strolling and sipping hot chocolate.

I’m wearing the Point Zero Curvy super soft faux suede leggings and caramel boots to highlight the browns in the coatigan.

I hope you enjoyed this look and invite you to kick up your Fall style while keeping it comfy and simple.

Special thanks to Annika for styling this look and taking these photos.

Ardene’s – More Than Just Accessories Part 2

In my previous post featuring Ardene’s, I talked about the exciting discovery that their size XL in clothing actually fits my size 16, and I featured a lovely pastel, bohemian maxi dress. And because they were offering a second dress at $1, I had to pick up this lovely navy diamond print strapless maxi.

It was a little long for my compact 5’1″ self, so I did get it hemmed – and yes ladies, I do encourage you to purchase things that you love and INVEST in a slight alteration. Isn’t the prefect fit and that fabulous feeling worth it?

I decided to coordainte the look with unexpected pastels, also from Ardene’s, and picked up this pastel chain link long necklace, and beaded bracelet bunch.

A couple of selfies, for good measure…

To keep the look casual and bohemian, I chose these caramel gladiator sandals, ALSO from Ardene’s. Yup, the entire look, for a plus size gal like me, from Ardene’s. Who woulda thought?

And here’s the side by side.

I shot this look myself using my new tri-pod (how awesomely independent and resourceful of me) at the beautiful Brampton Heartlake Conservation Area. Inviting rolling landscapes, a gazebo, bridges, ducks – I’ll definitely be shooting there again.

Ardene’s – More Than Just Accessories

One of my recent fashion discoveries was that Ardene’s extra large sizes ACTUALLY fit me, at a plump size 16 – what a pleasant surprise! Most of us curvier girls have shopped at Ardene’s for years – but only for costume jewelry and accessories. So I’m sharing the good news, that if you wear a size 12 to 16, you can get some of their cute, trendy, seasonal fashions as well. And if you wear a regular width shoe, you can enjoy some of their sandals too.

I purchased two dresses… because ladies… right now, their dresses are “Buy One, Get One for $1”!  So ya, I couldn’t pass that up, and neither should you if you wear this size range. Stay tuned, the second dress will be featured in a separate blog post.

Here we go.

The first totally dreamy tube maxi dress is ultra feminine with a beachy blend of turquoise and coral on a soft ivory palette and unimposing elastic waist to define the silhouette.

And because I was feeling like a princess, I styled it with a wonderfully dramatic body chain and my coral wedges from Maurices (featured in a previous post).

The dress has a short lining, which hits me about mid-thigh.

I felt really beautiful and feminine in this dress and I’m so glad I got it! At $35 (and a second dress for only $1), I am pleased with the quality and fit. I hope you enjoyed this look and can benefit from Ardene’s clothing.

A Blogaversary to Remember: The Stylish Reid

Last night I was super lucky, and stoked, to attend the one year blogaversary of the Canadian plus size fashion blog by Annika Reid, “The Stylish Reid”.

Annika is a fascinating woman; Mom, designer, blogger, friend, and business woman. In 2008, she set off as a designer, bringing stunning plus size fashion and custom-made gowns to her fans and clients. She has evolved over the years to become a blogger/vlogger extraordinaire.

Last night (Sunday, June 29, 2015), she invited friends, family, collaborators, bloggers and clients to celebrate the event in style, sisterhood and love. Here’s a look at the evening through my eyes, and my amateur lens.

Before the crowd arrived, Annika was busy getting every detail just right.

IMG_1943 IMG_1968

The truly decadent catering included delicious finger foods and abundant desserts. Annika sure knows how to treat her guests; it just kept coming and coming!

IMG_1921 IMG_1922 IMG_2017 IMG_2001

Annika presented some of her best designs from past collections, and new styles from her capsule series.

Makeup was done by Annika’s little sister Tamara (on left below, and her work on model Ro in middle, and models Julienne and Sarah on right).

Her host Joy challenged the crowd to play some trivia for prizes…

IMG_2242 IMG_2042 IMG_2031

Performances like spoken word by Joy Oke, songs by Pure Ivory, burlesque dancing by Belles Jumelles, and music by Tricia Campbell were outstanding and thought provoking, sending messages of beauty diversity and female empowerment.

IMG_2134   IMG_2057 IMG_2070 IMG_2080

Guests arrived in high style, relishing the occasion to dress up…

IMG_1977 IMG_1971 IMG_1960 IMG_1942 IMG_1932  IMG_2231 IMG_1982 IMG_2135

But the overwhelming sense of love and support was truly felt and seen at the end of the show, when everyone came over to hug and congratulate the lady of the hour….

Annika thanked friends for their support and generosity, and honored sponsors who made the evening possible.

Always by her side, Annika’s daughter Aniyah…

It was such a lovely evening and the sense of joy and pride for Annika was genuine. I truly enjoy reading her blog and watching her videos on YouTube because she combines her passion for fashion with an honest insight into her lifestyle.

Fast Fashion, Frugal Fun. Plus Sizes at Maurices.

The title says it all – Maurices offers trendy fashion at low prices and I do declare I was a happy shopper on my very first visit to this American company with stores in Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan (locator link below). I visited the Georgetown store and it was clean, well organized and the clothing was nicely presented (a refreshing twist from some other ‘fast fashion’ stores that are messy and the racks are over-crowded). The beautifully decorated fittings rooms were a decent size, with plenty of hooks and a big bench. The plus size selection was not as abundant as the regular size selection, but for a store offering all sizes (1-26), it wasn’t bad.

With a mixture of aztec, chevron and bohemian florals, and a medley of cardigans, urban style tops, bottoms, a few dresses, and tons of accessories, the more I browsed and rummaged, the more I found that appealed to me.

I’m really feeling long bohemian cardigans these days, and how they add a dimension to an otherwise simple outfit, so I tried on a few with different tops and dresses. Excuse the low quality pics as these were on-the-spot fitting room selfies.

This navy blue sleeveless long lace cardi was super nice with the printed maxi dress. I loved the multitude of happy colors.

This woven hooded oatmeal long cardi with sleeves was cozy, and just made me feel so summer cottage.

This sleeveless oatmeal cardi made my next outfit come to life – who would have thought that my bra and my basic black capri leggings could look so damn sexy! Oh and the laser cut strappy sandals in this pic, ya, they sell those too, and I got them in nude!

So beautiful right?

I really loved the fresh look the next two fringed cardis created, and the mint one came home with me. Imagine, black leggings, a plain cami or tank top, and one of these. Voila, a trendy new outfit comes to life, and you’ve got arm coverage without looking like you are looking for arm coverage – ladies who are shy about your arms, you know what I’m talking about here.

11424328_10155676966440517_583614811_n 11356177_10155676966390517_1776254086_n 11212488_10155676966385517_631136085_n

They also had some more career, structured pieces like this beautiful turquoise lace zippered jacket.

Coral is one of my favorite colors, maybe because it represents “abundance, energy and happiness”, so I tried these two coral tops and took home the lace one.

11638093_10155676966570517_221059306_n 11421709_10155676966640517_724388619_n

And finally, the outfit you’ve been waiting for, the one I actually left the store wearing (AFTER PAYING FOR IT!), is this abstract print top, adorable sleeveless cropped jean jacket with lace detail, and the coral wedge sandals. Note: The shoes are not wide width, just regular fit.

Having worked in the corporate world for 10 years, and then operating my own boutique, I don’t have a lot of stylish casual clothes and this outfit hit the spot. So now I have some cute options to throw on and easily mix & match for the weekend.

Hey now…me and my chubby fingers are so fly.

I added a small necklace by My Beaded Designs. While I love big bold statement necklaces, you have to know when it’s too much. In this case, we have a mixed-print color palette in the top, and mixed textures of denim and lace in the jacket so something subtle for the neck was in order. I even could have gone without.

And don’t be afraid to mix colors, prints and textures. It’s time to make your own rules.

For instance, you might be inclined to pair this green fringed kimono with a green top, but…

pMAUR1-21114395v275 pMAUR1-20393513v275

…imagine how cool and unexpected it would look with the same top in blue?

Or a blue one with a print? How radical!

I’m so happy that I found Maurices and that I can share with you another option for cute, trendy, affordable plus size clothing in a welcoming shopping enviroment. Oh, and their sizes were bang on – I normally wear a size 16 and their 1X was perfect for me. I didn’t have to size up, which is sometimes the case with trendy brands. In fact, some of the XL in regular sizes actually fit. Way to go Maurices!

The Maurices website is easy to use, the pictures load quickly, and the online plus size selection is pretty good.

So check them out ladies and let me know what you find there. And please send me pics.

See ya later!

Consign Your Curves – Plus Size Closet Sale in Guelph Ontario

WOW – am I ever happy I was lucky enough to participate in the Consign Your Curves (#ConsignYourCurves) plus size closet sale that took place May 30, 2015 in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Organized by the charismatic Carlie Roberts, and pulled together by her fabulous team of volunteers and supporters, Consign Your Curves was a HUGE success. This year was the third annual, and we hope it becomes a bi-annual event with Spring and Fall sales.

plus size closet sale consign your curves

If you don’t know what a closet sale is, here’s the reader’s digest – but keep in mind that SO much more goes into making the event successful than what I’ve listed here. Essentially, Carlie invites sellers who consist of bloggers and fashionistas alike to sell their gently used (and some never worn) clothing, jewelry, accessories and footwear at a massive one day sale.

plus size closet sale consign your curves

This year’s event took place at Three Willows Church in Guelph. Each seller is given a rack, and tags their items with their unique initials. Each seller either has a specific task or helps other sellers as needed. Makeshift changing rooms are created, and the public shops till they drop! All tags are removed and collected when an item is purchased, which are tallied at the end of the day, and each seller is paid their earnings.

What a wonderful concept! The sellers get to turn unworn clothing and fabulous fashion into liquid cash (to purchase more fab fashion I’m sure) and consumers get to access an amazing selection of plus size fashion, in all sizes from 12-32, including some very elusive and valuable designer pieces at a steal of a price. And let’s remember that bloggers are some of the most stylish ladies around, so we’re talking really nice pieces from around the world. Below is blogger Annika from Candi Apple Couture aka The Stylish Reid scoring a HOT peacock Rue 107 bodycon dress.

And here’s a customer trying on one of my pieces, an asymmetrical top that she thought was perfect for going on mat leave. Yes, she bought it, and I think it was something like $8. She was happy.

What I love most is how everyone comes together to make the day successful. Whether you’re a seller, a volunteer or a customer, it doesn’t matter – you just pitch in and help your sister out!

Pull a curtain so a girl can change, pick up a blouse that fell on the floor, make a community Tim’s run, share your fan with your sweaty neighbor.

With so much competitiveness in our day to day lives, and the race to be successful, it’s nice to know that there’s still an overwhelmingly strong sense of unity among us ladies. I felt it and so did the shoppers. I received so much great feedback all day long, despite torrential downpours and a very hot and humid venue.

I met some really cool curvy sisters, like plus model Melissa Shannon, bloggers Mustang Sally and Karyn Johnson of Killer Kurves, and blogger/designer Jessica Biffi among so many others.

It’s always good for my soul to connect with the lovely Sheena Snively – and um, no one can pull off a yellow polka dot head wrap quite as adorably as she can and that’s final. On the right, I’m pictured with blogger gal_from_panada, Sheena and Erica from the blog Erica Exposed.

There were 40 sellers in total – shown here and listed at the end of this post.

plus size closet sale consign your curves

I worked the check out table for a few hours in the afternoon, and let me tell you from about 12-3 it was NON STOP. Women were SO happy to find such an amazing, clean, well cared for and unique selection of plus size clothing in so many sizes in one place. At the end of the day, I was delighted to see that about half my rack had sold. As a new blogger, I’m going to use that money to make new purchases to discover and share more plus size brands with you.

A huge thank you to Carlie for creating this event and bringing the opportunity, the fun and the fashion to so many.

Until next year (or maybe the Fall Carlie??? pwetty pwease?), make sure you subscribe to my blog for updates on Consign Your Curves and other plus size events in and around the city or check my Events page regularly.

Love, Stef
