Holiday Double Slay – Girls Night In!

Happy Friday Fans! My second feature for the 2018 #HolidayDoubleSlay is a GROUP SLAY and it’s a total “girls night in” vibe. Lisa invited each of us to select casual lounge looks from the extensive and super cute collection offered by Lane Bryant. We had so much fun shooting this instalment and even got into a bit of a pillow fight!

The best part about the group shot in the #HolidayDoubleSlay series is that we really get to showcase #BeautyDiversity: our ages range from 35-45, we are petite, average and tall, we are pears and apples and all the yummy fruits, and we wear sizes 14/16 to 26/28. I think you’ll agree that these photos really demonstrate the beauty in all our unique sizes and shapes; after all, the world would be so boring without diversity!

Now let’s talk about my look. I didn’t have to scroll too far on the Lane Bryant website before totally falling for this adorable active/lounge set.

I’m a leggings girl through and through (no news there right?) and I also love vests because they are practical and provide warmth without restricting movement. But I’ve only ever seen them in solids and dark colours. Imagine my excitement when I saw Puffer Vest in a beautiful floral print that totally brightens up an otherwise dull looking Fall/Winter season. AND I was beyond delighted when I saw the matching leggings! Gah!!!

I paired it with a long cozy burgundy active hoodie and I loved how the ruffled hem gives a girly flavour to a sporty look. This hoodie also comes in several colours.

And how fun are these festive socks? Grab yours: they are now on sale as part of Lane Bryant’s door buster for $5US!

Lisa’s look was super cozy and girly too. Both looks are travel friendly and perfect for girls night in!

An important element to this year’s campaign was to showcase pictures of us sitting down; something so many women shy away from when getting their picture taken. We wanted to celebrate the curvy body and all it’s cuteness in any position, in the hopes in dispelling some of the fear. So here’s to our belly rolls, our chubby knees, thick thighs and to our realness!

Over the years Lisa and I have done more than collaborate on projects in the world of plus size fashion: we’ve become great friends. She is a woman of principle, and her kind don’t come around too often, so, yeah, I’m hangin’ on.

Check out all the girls’ looks:

For now, we wish you all the happiest of holidays, and remember what’s important: time with family and friends, a spirit of benevolence, and of course, great lounge wear 😉

This post was proudly sponsored by Lane Bryant but all opinions are my own.

Special thanks to Rebecca of Rebecca Northcott Photography for these amazing photos, to Christina of makeupbychristinaxo for my fabulous hair and to Petula of mz.fabartistry for my perfect makeup!!

Best Athletic Apparel for Full Figured Athletes

It goes without saying that having some fashion-forward yet functional athletic apparel in your wardrobe may make you more motivated to hit the gym. We’re not just talking about cute patterns or bright colors, either — but the kind of pieces that also practically address all of your needs during a sweat session. If you’re a curvy woman, there’s a specific set of requirements your fitness apparel needs to meet to make the cut. But there’s no reason why you should compromise on style just to accommodate your body type.

Whether you’re looking to nail that warrior pose, train for a half marathon or boost your boxing skills, you deserve to look — and feel — good doing it. Luckily, we rounded up some of the best fitness apparel from size-inclusive companies, from flattering tanks to supportive sports bras.

Best basic legging

The brand Addition Elle has been around for more than 30 years with the motto “fashion democracy in sizes 12 to 26.” NOLA is the company’s partnership with body-positive supermodel Ashley Graham, and it includes a vast array of eye-catching activewear for plus-sized women. You can’t go wrong with the Nola Run Sculpting Legging Capris — they boast compression technology and a wide-waistband, which helps with shaping from the waist down, smoothing and flattering your hips, stomach and legs. To boot, the body mapping on these leggings promise increased ventilation so you stay cool and comfortable throughout your sweat session.

Best long-sleeved pullover

Katie Kozloff is a former fitness trainer who noticed that plus-sized clients in her classes were struggling to find stylish workout apparel. So she founded her own line, Katie K Active — and every single design is fit on plus-sized models to ensure they’re flattering. The Propel Funnel-Neck Pullover is an ideal layering piece for workouts during the cooler seasons, with 4-way stretch moisture-wicking performance fabric and thumbholes on the sleeves to keep your hands warm. A wide bottom band and the extra length lend some coverage and contouring anti-chafe seams offer comfort and subtle shaping at the same time.

Best sports bra

There’s no doubt that a well-constructed plus size sports bra is essential to any workout, whether you’re doing cardio, strength training or anything in between. This is especially true with high-impact activity, such as running, HIIT and plyometrics. Opt for a plus size high impact sports bra, which is specifically designed to control bounce during intense exercise. We suggest the Glamorise Sport Underwire Sport Bra, which features seamless double-layer cups for bounce reduction, moisture-wicking fabric and two-way stretch in the back for maximum comfort.

Best tee

The name says it all: Marika Curves is all about designing activewear that allows you to embrace your figure, no matter what kind of physical activity you’re engaging in. When you’re seeking a workout top that has sleeves but is still practical for warmer weather, look no further than the Emma slimming tee, which is constructed of soft, stretchy Dry-Wik fabric as well as power mesh, which is known for its compression capabilities. The V-neck and shirred curve seams have an instant slimming effect, and it comes in a slew of both neutral as well as bright colors.

Best tank

Juno Active, which was created over 20 years ago, is specifically aimed at women sizes XL to 6X, and all of the clothing is designed using plus-sized models to make the patterns. The brand offers gear for a wide range of activities, from running and swimming to tennis and yoga, and all the prices are remarkably budget-friendly. The Stretch Naturals Long Support Tank allows for free movement in a blend of cotton and Lycra with a hint of spandex, features a chafe-free inner shelf, and it comes in a multitude of striking hues. The v-neck front and modified racerback back provide a sleek silhouette, and you can easily wear it tucked in our out of your workout bottoms, or layered under a zip-up.

Best fun leggings

Sometimes basic black leggings just won’t cut it. On days when you need a little extra dose of color and print to inspire your workout, slip on a pair by Lineagewear. The line quickly became known for its universally flattering leggings in eye-catching patterns, like the super popular watercolor leggings, which are available in sizes up to 5X and have sold out more than once. The high waist, contoured shape, angled inseam and lightweight, moisture-wicking fabric make these leggings a godsend no matter what kind of exercise you’re performing.

Pyjama Shenanigans

My second feature, and the final instalment of this year’s #HolidayDoubleSlay with blogger, influencer and my friend Lisa of Mustangsallytwo, is here and it’s all about PJ’s!!

What a great way to end a fun and festive series celebrating plus size fashion, body positivity and the beauty that comes in all shapes and sizes. And just in case you missed them, here are links to each of the #HolidayDoubleSlay features from Lisa’s blog:

Monday – Lisa & Gail in Eloquii

Tuesday – Lisa & Me in Catherine’s

Wednesday – Lisa & Sarah in Full Beauty

Thursday – Lisa & Caterina in Torrid

The final look is a GROUP SLAY!! This segment was so much fun to shoot because A) we are undeniably adorable and B) we were all incredibly comfy! All of our looks are provided by Lane Bryant from their fantastic Sleep & Lounge collection. We selected each look ourselves, and we were so impressed by the versatility they had to offer. Each one of us was able to find something to reflect our personal style in our size.

In the colder months, I am definitely a leggings, tunic and tall boots kinda gal, so my “Chillin’ With My Snowmies” set and knee-high socks was a natural choice. The fabric was soft, stretchy, high quality, and the size was just right (I am wearing the 1X). The socks are so fun, and they complete the look making it something I could totally wear on Christmas morning without freezing my toes off. They are now sold out, but here’s a cute alternative.

We each shot a look alongside Lisa, the creative mind behind this entire collaboration.

Bringing Lisa’s vision to life was not only super fun, but a reflection of the friendship we’ve developed and the genuine affection we have for each other.

Please enjoy all of Lisa’s #HolidayDoubleSlay looks on her blog – and yeah, we’ve already started planning next year’s: think outdoors at night, a park flooded with Christmas lights, jeans and outerwear…you’ll wanna be here for that!

For now, we wish you all the happiest of holidays, and remember what’s important: time with family and friends, a spirit of benevolence, and of course, great PJ’s 😉

Thanks to Katie of Katiuska Idrovo Photography for these AMAZING photos – it was my first time meeting and working with her and she was as delightful and professional as she is talented.

With love,

It’s been a while since my last post, but I am so proud to bring you the Ambrosia. This dress, by one of my favourite recently relaunched brands, IGIGI, is quite spectacular.

When you love a bodycon (a form fitted style that outlines your curves) like I do, but you also are a little self-conscious of your tummy, ruching is your friend. Ruching is a style of pleating that has become popular in recent years, and the reason it is embraced is because it camouflages the area it covers. So if you are drawn to bodycons, but you’re a little shy about your mid-section, look for dresses with ruching, or better yet, try the Ambrosia itself.

With a slightly off-shoulder design, and a sweetheart neckline revealing a slight décolletage, the Ambrosia is a sexy yet still sophisticated cocktail, dinner or date option.

Given the time of year and approaching Spring weather, I decided to style it with a cream coloured wedge sandal and accessorize with ruby and cream accents.

The large Ruby Multi Chain Faceted Teardrop Crystal Necklace Set elevates the look to a more formal level. And the Sophie Multi-wear shawl by designer Joseph Ribkoff provides a layer of elegance and ties in with the sandals.

The Ambrosia dress comes in black and teal as well, in sizes 14-36.

Just Do It

A guest post by Teresa Hodgins Power

Just Do It

When I turned 40 I heard that your eyesight goes, you start to forget nouns etc.  Well, it’s true!  I’m in the middle of a conversation and suddenly I can’t remember the next word that I want to say.  I stumble through trying all different ways to remember.. you know the, the, the, fingers snapping, the thing, the one that goes with, well what do you call it when.  As if the person I’m having a conversation with is the Encyclopedia of Britannica.   Perhaps only those reading this over 30 will understand that reference!

For the eyesight that was a fun moment.  It actually happened before I hit 40.  I was at a conference and my schedule was on the back of my name tag on a lanyard around my neck.  Thank goodness for elastic lanyards and long arms!

So now that I’ve turned 50 I think the next step in the evolution of a woman is forgetfulness.  Walk into a room to do something and do something else.  Or, walk out of the room before you even do anything because you’ve heard that if you re-enter the room you will remember what you were going to do there in the first place.  Even that doesn’t always work for me these days.

So I have decided “JUST DO IT”!  This may be the Nike marketing slogan, however it proves a good point.  Just do it, when you think of it, just do it!!  That goes for homework, housework, laundry, calling your mother, sending an email to a friend that you haven’t heard from in a while etc….

Some may say write a list.  Well, for me lists don’t work.  Either I forget where I put the list or forget the list at home, in my purse, when I go to do something that’s on the list.  Here’s an example, my Honey gave me some buns the other day, we didn’t finish them at the Christmas dinner so we thought we would take them up to the out-laws for dinner the next day.  I put them on the stove to remember to take.  I should have put them right by my purse because about a kilometer from home, “did you put the buns in the trunk” … ahhh nope they are still on the stove.  Needless to say my mother in law makes really good homemade bread and there was lots to go around.

Just do it!

This is not only going to help my forgetfulness it’s also going to help me.  When something is accomplished I feel so much better about it.  I’m going to come out and tell people when they look nice, yes complete strangers.  I’ll walk up and tell them I like their outfit, they look nice.   I’m going to make a phone call or send an email when I’m thinking about someone.  Go get milk when I realize … darn see I forgot even what I was going to type …

Want to say something to someone, good or bad, get it off your chest.  Say what you mean to say, spit it out.  You will feel better for it, maybe not right away, but at least, you won’t be holding it in anymore.

When it’s something nice you want to say, say it often.  I totally talk to strangers all the time now!  I saw a beautiful outfit on a woman at the mall the other day and told her so, she was very surprised and thought I wanted something…  Nope just loved the outfit.  We don’t tell people enough that we like them, the way they look, their smile, their hair … Just do it!

Now that the new year is here there are a bunch of resolutions going around and this is mine, just do it!

Get out and enjoy life, don’t wait for it to come to you.  Go grab it by the balls.  Just do it!

Do something that you haven’t done before, take a course not related to your current job.  Go take a pottery lesson, go hiking.  Head to the museum to see that time limited display.  Start volunteering with a charity, raise money for a cause that’s close to your own heart.  Say good morning to that good looking guy/gal in the elevator, you might just meet a new friend.

These are just a very, very few ideas.  For me it’s because I’m so forgetful now and I mean to expand my personal universe.

So I say just do it!

What do you say?

#HolidayDoubleSlay with MustangSallyTwo

I am so excited to share this totally cool collab that I was involved in with my friend and blogger babe Lisa of Mustangsallytwo. We were talking about her upcoming holiday look book a few weeks ago and the idea of combining each of her festive looks with a fellow blogger or model was born, so each day this week she has been sharing a unique look featuring a different brand in each post. It’s called the Holiday Double Slay, and it’s been causing quite a merry stir since Monday.

Here’s a recap of the beautiful, sassy, sparkly looks she’s shared so far:

Monday: Lisa and Thera, wearing Lane Bryant

Tuesday: Lisa and Caterina, wearing SexyPlus (a design by Kiyonna)

Wednesday: Lisa and Sarah, wearing Torrid

Photo credit: Robert Skuja Photography (left and right) Photo credit: Stefanie Augusteijn (centre)

And….THURSDAY is Lisa and ME wearing SWAK (Sealed with a Kiss Designs)!!!

I was so inspired by Lisa’s holiday project and delighted to be included. I love to create and I just knew we would have bumper to bumper fun.

We are wearing the Carmen dress which is a sheath dress with colour blocking and mesh detail at the top.

The black side panels are a chic optical benefit because they help enhance an hourglass silhouette.

I am wearing the 1X and the fit is true to size. Lisa is wearing the 5X. I LOVE and appreciate that SWAK is devoted to the plus size woman and manufactures accurate sizes up to 6X.

The sweetheart shaped mesh top ads a sexy feel to the look and I would recommend wearing a strapless bra for a smooth unencumbered presentation. I’m smitten with how the mesh tends to have a ruched look too because of the pleating on the neckline hem.

I loVe the deep V plunge at the back which gives the dress that “watch me walk away” appeal.

To contrast Lisa’s choice of a black pump, I went with a sexy lace-up medium-heeled faux-suede boot.

Then, for warmth and coverage I chose a sweater cardi with faux fur collar for that cozy yet glamorous flair.

The statement necklace is an oldie but definitely gave my look some sparkle and decor.

I am wearing shapewear of course, size 1X.

And these photos! What can I say, I am so impressed with the work of Robert Skuja of Robert Skuja Photography for making me feel beautifully captured.

So stay tuned for the rest of Lisa’s Holiday Double Slay campaign with Nakitende Esther on Friday and Amanda Montgomery on Saturday. Thank you Lisa for the gift of creating this with you. Click here for Lisa’s review of this dress on her blog.

Wishing you all a magical Christmas, whatever that means to you.

Sandra & Parker

This post is one which I gather will appeal to many because of its easy wearability. The Sandra Cut-out dress by SWAK Designs is an easy to wear dress with a cool cut-out at the bust. It’s perfect for Fall with 1/2 sleeves and a knee-length design. The cut-out isn’t too revealing so you could easily wear this dress to the office or to a cocktail event.

I think most of us, would, by default, pair this dress with a black cardigan (and that would look sharp), but I wanted to show you how fun it can be when you step outside of your comfort zone, and opt for something fun. The Parker Cardigan is soft, comfortable, versatile and bright. And because I prefer a cinched look to outline my silhouette, I threw on a belt and I love the completed ensemble.

A tall black boot refines the outfit and balances the solids in this look.

Try something different when coordinating your outfits and you might be delightfully surprised. Turquoise zebra print and cranberry… or as SWAK calls it, Sandra & Parker 🙂

Special thanks to Sarah Taylor for taking my pics!
