Saying Goodbye to Summer 16

I have enjoyed Summer 2016 probably more than any summer in my life because I can honestly say that I’ve come to a point where my insecurities and societal pressures DO NOT affect how I dress. I’ve worn my hair pulled back into a pony because of the high temps, something I would not have done before because I didn’t think I was pretty with my hair that way. I’ve gone to the beach, worn sleeveless dresses all summer, showed my knees in shorts, and dressed according to the climate, with a sense of freedom and exhilaration.

So while I am sad that it’s coming to an end, the consolation prize is the AMAZING Fall fashions coming this way. As the owner of SexyPlus Clothing boutique, I’ve selected some fabulous pieces for you to welcome the harvest season with joy and excitement, like this ensemble from Point Zero Curvy brand, now in store.

IMG_2572

The top is gorgeous and I love cold shoulders – so sassy. The corset effect at the bust is just so me and the bell sleeves, well, that’s what I’ve come to love and expect from Point Zero Curvy, in that they never compromise details and style.

IMG_2577

The back features a nice V and the side slits on the blouse allow it to fall loosely on your hips without being clingy. If you are self-conscious about your belly, trust me this top is your friend as I have a pretty pronounced mid-section which is nicely concealed in this top.

IMG_2581

The length is perfect to wear with these super bad new leggings – the faux-leather sections in the front make them look like boots. In the colder months, I would wear these with booties and they would look like over-the-knee boots!

IMG_2566

In a thick, curve-hugging ponte fabric with large elastic waist bands, they stay in place and are truly uber comfy.

IMG_2562

So don’t feel bad about summer ending…Fall is going to be fabulous dontcha know!

3 Accessories for the Most Stylish Summer Ever

The sun is shining and the temperatures are steadily rising. Yep, it’s most definitely summertime! Summer is one of the most fun seasons for fashion because of all the poppy colors and prints that come along with it. Although you can wear black in the summer, it’s not nearly as practical—you’re probably going to regret it once you spend longer than 15 minutes in the sun!

The best part about summer fashion isn’t just the clothing, though. In fact, some might argue that the real winners are the accessories. Summer calls for plenty of outfit add-ons that are not only adorable, but actually serve a purpose. I love throwing on at least one accessory I really adore to bring my outfit to the next level. Especially if it’s a look you’ve worn a few times and want to transform, accessories have the power to do that!

So today’s post is dedicated to some superstar accessories that will make this your most stylish summer ever. Here are the contenders…

A handbag with personality

The type of handbag a woman carries can say a lot about her. Does she stay on the safe side? Does she like to take risks? Is she either high or low maintenance, or is she just in between? For the summertime, why not show off your playful side and get a clutch or a tote with some attitude? Fun, summery prints featuring citrus fruits or nautical motifs are all over the style scene right now. See some ideas in handbag roundup.

Lace-up heels

It’s no secret that lace-up shoes are totally trendy right now. These shoes are great for summer not only because they are adorable, but also because they let your feet breathe. No one wants her feet feeling trapped in the heat! Lace-up heels give you a very feminine look, and the strings wrapping up your ankle have a way of lengthening your legs. These are a must for your summer dresses, and this trend breakdown has full outfit examples.

Fabulous sunglasses

Untitled-1

Heading outside in the summer without sunglasses is practically a death wish. You will be squinting all day, and did you know that the sun can seriously damage your eyesight? That’s why I like to protect my peepers with fabulous sunnies that make me feel like a celebrity. Cat-eye styles work with many face shapes, and mirrored lenses are definitely trending if you’re feeling a bit edgy. I like looking through curated fashion lists for some hand-picked inspiration, especially when it comes to finding the right pair of sunglasses.

And to top it all off, one of the best accessories that will instantly make you shine is confidence. When you exude confidence, your posture gets better and you smile a little wider—two things that will definitely give your summer outfit the boost you’ve been looking for. Wear it loud and wear it proud, ladies!

Yona New York

In case you haven’t noticed, plus size fashion is taking a huge leap forward. It may still be a grossly underserved market compared to “regular” sizes, but designers are taking the plunge and having fun with it.

Meet Yona New York.

Yona Love believes that beauty is not about size, but about style and confidence.

She has created a line of plus size fashion for the full figured woman who wants color, pattern, style and sophistication. Who wants to be able to express who she is through her clothing. Maybe for the very first time. Sophisticated styling based on the latest trends, structured to fit a fuller figured woman, cuts that drape, fabrics that give and designs that cover but don’t hug the body are all part of Yona’s signature style.

IMG_2776

This is the Kimono Dress in Floral. A unique criss-cross bosom that drapes into the skirt provides the perfect shaped silhouette without being clingy. And this is a staple in Yona’s designs – that they are office appropriate but still feminine.

It was a little loose (I am wearing the 1X, which I normally wear) so it is refreshing that their sizing isn’t on the small side like with so many plus size brands. I had to cinch the back so this is why it appears to be sweeping upward on the sides. The normal fit, as shown on the model below, won’t have this effect.

I liked the loose kimono sleeves and the romantic floral pattern. I am wearing my shapewear because I am more comfortable feeling supported but this is definitely a style that wouldn’t require it.

IMG_2772-bokeh

In keeping with my girly styling tendencies, I went with a laser cut wedge, coral earrings and an orange floral hair clip. To turn this into a smart work look, I would wear black heels and perhaps a black cardi or jacket, with simple gold earrings.

Special thanks to Annika of the blog The Stylish Reid for snapping these great shots. Editing done by me.

The Style Whisperer

Growing up my sister and I spent a lot of time at ranches and equestrian centres. Our Mom even let us go on a three-day overnight hike on horseback. Best. Memories. Ever.

But as we grew up, and my sister Melanie became more and more involved in horsemanship, I navigated towards the corporate world. Air conditioning, pretty clothes everyday…you get it. My sister has become one of the best coaches and equestrian experts in Ontario, and I’m so proud of her. When she suggested a shoot at Hockley Hills School of Horsemanship where she currently teaches, I couldn’t resist, knowing that the pictures would be so unexpected and romantic. She even chose a gorgeous candidate who has the bluest eyes to match my dress by SWAK Designs.

Meet the handsome Frankie, and the regal Sabrina.

IMG_1580

The Sabrina Maxi Dress is a winning style that SWAK has been offering for a few seasons, always coming up with new colours on the same great cut.

IMG_1554

With a full voluptuous skirt, empire waist and criss-cross bust, it’s flattering on so many shapes. And yes, even if you are petite like me (5’2″), you can wear maxis and totally feel like a goddess.

IMG_1581

IMG_1538

I chose a skinny gold belt to accent my jewelry, but this of course is totally optional. I just like to emphasize the waistline and create more of a silhouette. And to make the look a little more formal, although this dress can go both ways, I paired it with a long cardi – something I think every girl should have as a wardrobe staple.

IMG_1536

And even though the straps are skinny spaghetti straps, it really doesn’t look bad with my black bra straps showing. If you’re not comfortable with that, you can get a bra in the same colour, switch the straps out for clear ones, or wear a jacket.

IMG_1624

The Sabrina maxi dress get two thumbs up for fit, quality and price. It comes in black, pale rose, teal and there are new colours each season as mentioned.

Thanks as always for stopping by, for your support, and for learning to love your curves through fashion. Special thanks to my sister Melanie Chin for taking these beautiful pictures and for providing the wonderful “props”! She can be contacted here for riding lessons.

Blushing Goddess

This post is a special one because I actually collaborated with my one and only sister, Melanie Chin, to make it happen. I wanted a different landscape for my next feature, and she suggested the equestrian centre where she coaches. How lucky am I to have a sister who works with horses?!

This is the beautiful Hockley Hills School of Horsemanship, nestled in the picturesque Ontario countryside, in Orangeville.

IMG_1712

Although totally inadequately dressed for riding of any sort, my Joan Maxi Dress by SWAK (Sealed with a Kiss Designs) was perfect for posing, being admired and being a Goddess among these beautiful, graceful horses.

IMG_1665

Joan Plus Size Maxi Dress

As you can see it’s a little too long and I would definitely need to get it shortened, but the good thing is that it can accommodate many of my taller plus size comrades.

IMG_1654

It is such a graceful dress and hits the spot in all areas of design elements that are important to me:

  • v-neck: check! Reveal a slight décolletage, and showcase a nice statement necklace
  • sleeves: check! Lately I’ve just been a little less comfortable being bare-armed, so I am gravitating towards sleeves. It may only be for a season, and for no good reason, but it’s making me love these kimono style, barely there sleeves.
  • empire body: check! Empire waist help to define your silhouette and in my case as a petite plus size woman, they give me the illusion of a bit more height.
  • back tie: check! Always nice to be able to cinch the look to your own silhouette. Kinda makes the dress customizable, and the long sashes add a nice detail in back.

IMG_1696

IMG_1703

I coordinated this look with a thin yellow belt, which is unexpected but blends nicely with the soft, happy, feminine, palette. And one of my favourite statement necklaces showcasing oversized flowers in pastels of coral, yellow, pink, and lime green.

IMG_1673

A summery laser-cut wedge kept the look light. And the beauty next to me, well, her name is Jewel and we love her.

IMG_1651

IMG_1679

I often hear that petite gals feel that they can’t wear maxi dresses, and although I always respect any personal choice and preference, I hope they don’t feel that way because of height. Ain’t I proof that petites do the Maxi justice, even if we have to carry it a bit? Have I earned the title, Blushing Goddess?

IMG_1709-r1

The Joan Maxi Dress is also available in other colours: charcoal, cranberry, turquoise, navy, green and black. SWAK is excellent at offering affordable, trendy plus size clothing that is meant to be really lived in.

Special thanks and love to my sister Melanie Chin, who was so enthusiastic in setting this up, and for her superb photography. She’s a pretty amazing woman, not to mention my mud hero.

She is always so supportive of me and my endeavors even though we live and work in very different worlds. She is also one of the most established, commended and gifted riding coaches in Ontario.

She can be contacted here for riding lessons.

A Thousand Wishes

So aptly named for its whimsical design, this post features the Thousand Wishes dress by SexyPlus Clothing (a Point Zero Curvy design).

I am always drawn to super feminine things, and this plus size dress had me at, well, you know the rest. With a lightweight and flowy chiffon fabric, and a delicate geo print in subtle corals and mint greens on an ivory background, everything about it is like a daydream.

Paired with a coral wedge and a cute jean vest, it’s total summer everything.

IMG_0292

IMG_0299

To add to this dress’ appeal, the lining is knee-length giving it a see-through effect from the knee-down, so it kinda feels maxi, without the bulk.

IMG_0306

I actually love halter necklines, and have no problem wearing a strapless bra despite my 44D size. Addition Elle has excellent strapless options in a wide range of sizes. And they’re excellent quality for the price. I love a hint of cleavage provided by the keyhole detail.

IMG_0323

The back is nicely detailed as well, because Point Zero doesn’t sleep on unique design elements. The back panel, from the waist up, is wide enough that you don’t feel like it’s falling and showing too much skin.

IMG_0321

If you haven’t tried the Point Zero Curvy line which was introduced in 2015, you simply must. It’s the stuff we always wanted for big girls – but could never find. Now we can and my boutique, SexyPlus Clothing offers a substantial selection from their line each season.

I am wearing the 0X and am a healthy size 16 (18 on bottom). I am also wearing shapewear (which I always do).

Ruching, I love you.

Ruching, also sometimes spelled “rouching” and pronounced “roo-shing”, from the noun “ruche” is defined as: a strip of pleated lace, net, muslin, or other material for trimming or finishing a dress.

Ruching has gained popularity in fashion design in recent years, particularly in the body and hip area of dresses and tunics, and it’s a technique I know many of us have embraced. While we are making advances in the area of confidently showing our curves along with our lumps and bumps, notably a protruding belly outline (called #VBO in the world of plus size bloggers for Visible Belly Outline), some of us may still be more comfortable with some camouflage around our mid-section to minimize the belly outline. And that’s ok too, because it’s all about what makes you feel good, body positive movement aside.

For me, it depends on my state of mind (and level of confidence) at the time I’m considering a certain dress, for a certain event or activity. It fluctuates, and that’s ok. Sometimes I’m totally ok with a bold curve-hugging, unapologetic fit, and sometimes I am looking for a little help from some good ol’ ruching.

IMG_0397

This dress, the Zuri Plus Size Bodycon by SWAK Designs (Sealed with a Kiss Designs), does the trick. And to find it on a casual, cotton jersey dress like this is nice. With an asymmetrical hem design, this casual style actually allows you to feel kinda fabulous even if it’s just to run some errands.

IMG_0396

The shoulder straps are totally bra-friendly and the round neckline reveals the tiniest bit of décolletage without being too sexy for a daytime look.

IMG_0381

I envisioned it with the gorgeous and slightly dramatic Terri Chiffon Duster, also from SWAK, to provide some colour contrast. Isn’t it perfect?!

IMG_0378

IMG_0401

It’s the kind of piece you wear as an accessory, and I feel so chic in it. I brought the mint colour in with a simple pastel chainlink necklace, and the pweter boho chic bag by Coach was just so “ladies who lunch”.

IMG_0413

And for shoes, a neutral like these light brown studded sandals are fine because they do not compete with the dominant colour palette.

IMG_0383

The Zuri Bodycon Dress also comes in black, and if there are any left, teal. Hopefully SWAK will keep offering this cut, perhaps with sleeves for Fall, in new colours.

And the Terri Chiffon Duster also comes in the lovely multi print.
