A Simple Guide to Wearing Lace

Lace is an intricate, timeless fabric that always imparts an air of elegance to anyone who wears it. When shopping for a vintage lace dress, there is more to consider than simply which style is the most beautiful. This guide will help you navigate the gorgeous vintage styles you may encounter and help you find the perfect fit for your fashion sense.

Types of Lace

Alencon

victorian-inspired-lace-cover-up

Alencon lace is a delicate fabric with French origins. Characterized by floral patterns embroidered upon a sheer net background, this elegant fabric is extremely common when it comes to vintage lace dresses. It often lends itself to creating a beautiful scalloped edging on the hem of dresses and gowns made with this fabric.

Chantilly

Also created in France, this light, gauzy lace features complex floral patterns that are incredibly pleasing to the eye. Often ornamental, this fabric is frequently used in high-quality vintage lace dresses. With that said, it also exists frequently in modern fashions as well, especially when it comes to bridal fashions.

Guipure

lace-floral-western-shawl-by-marrika-nakkGuipure lace always makes a statement. Often featured on vintage lace dresses from the 1950s and 1960s, you can identify this lace by spotting its trademark beautiful and bold patterning. Thicker than other vintage laces, it has a crochet-inspired look that often covers a simple, elegant lining.

How to Wear It

Dresses made of Alencon or Chantilly lace are lightweight and delicate. The fabric is like a beautiful spiderweb that harkens back to a more sophisticated time. Vintage lace dresses featuring these intricate fabrics will make you feel like a classic beauty. Pair these incredible dresses with other ladylike accessories, like vintage-inspired hair accessories, a clutch purse, and the perfect pair of T-strap heels.

Vintage lace dresses featuring a Guipure lace overlay tend to have a more modern and contemporary style than dresses made from French-inspired laces. This lace tends to lean slightly more casual than other laces, making it more appropriate for everyday wear. With that said, lace always is inherently more sophisticated than other fabrics, so wear it with care. Because of the bold pattern, be sure to keep the rest of your accessories subdued so that they compliment – instead of overwhelm – your look.

Pyjama Shenanigans

My second feature, and the final instalment of this year’s #HolidayDoubleSlay with blogger, influencer and my friend Lisa of Mustangsallytwo, is here and it’s all about PJ’s!!

What a great way to end a fun and festive series celebrating plus size fashion, body positivity and the beauty that comes in all shapes and sizes. And just in case you missed them, here are links to each of the #HolidayDoubleSlay features from Lisa’s blog:

Monday – Lisa & Gail in Eloquii

Tuesday – Lisa & Me in Catherine’s

Wednesday – Lisa & Sarah in Full Beauty

Thursday – Lisa & Caterina in Torrid

The final look is a GROUP SLAY!! This segment was so much fun to shoot because A) we are undeniably adorable and B) we were all incredibly comfy! All of our looks are provided by Lane Bryant from their fantastic Sleep & Lounge collection. We selected each look ourselves, and we were so impressed by the versatility they had to offer. Each one of us was able to find something to reflect our personal style in our size.

In the colder months, I am definitely a leggings, tunic and tall boots kinda gal, so my “Chillin’ With My Snowmies” set and knee-high socks was a natural choice. The fabric was soft, stretchy, high quality, and the size was just right (I am wearing the 1X). The socks are so fun, and they complete the look making it something I could totally wear on Christmas morning without freezing my toes off. They are now sold out, but here’s a cute alternative.

We each shot a look alongside Lisa, the creative mind behind this entire collaboration.

Bringing Lisa’s vision to life was not only super fun, but a reflection of the friendship we’ve developed and the genuine affection we have for each other.

Please enjoy all of Lisa’s #HolidayDoubleSlay looks on her blog – and yeah, we’ve already started planning next year’s: think outdoors at night, a park flooded with Christmas lights, jeans and outerwear…you’ll wanna be here for that!

For now, we wish you all the happiest of holidays, and remember what’s important: time with family and friends, a spirit of benevolence, and of course, great PJ’s 😉

Holiday Double Slay with Mustangsallytwo

Well the holidays are in full swing now and I am so excited to share my recent collaboration with blogger extraordinaire and good friend, Lisa of Mustangsallytwo.

Lisa’s commitment to inspiring women through her blog is tremendous and she is one of the most dedicated influencers I know. She has become an icon in the plus size fashion industry and a leader in fearless fashion for plus sizes with a special focus on extended sizes. Her blog and social media presence provide a wealth of information and insight into brands that are size inclusive, such as Catherine’s, the plus size fashion company we are featuring for our #HolidayDoubleSlay looks.

The #HolidayDoubleSlay concept was born last year when Lisa wanted to team up with some of her favourite full figured fashionistas and plus size brands to showcase beauty diversity through festive fashion – it was such a hit, and so well received by her fans and followers that Lisa decided it had to be an annual event.

I loved being a part of last year’s project, and I am so honoured to have been invited by Lisa to participate again this year. So without further ado, let’s dive in to the fabulousness that is Catherine’s and the fierce options Lisa and I chose for this year’s holiday looks.

I wanted to showcase an outfit that was versatile and professional – in that it could be worn for the holidays but could also be repurposed throughout the rest of the year, and be representative of me as a business owner. The matching Moto Jacket and Ponte Skirt from their Curvy Collection was a great place to start. Both fit extremely well and the ponte fabric in both pieces made them very comfortable and easy to move in. The jacket zipped up easily and I love the silhouette shape it provided. And let’s face it, it is a total boss babe look.

Next, to throw in some rich colour and contrast, I chose the Drape Front Top in scarlett, and because I am petite, I tucked it partly into the skirt to balance out my torso with the length of the skirt. The beauty about this top is that it is long enough to wear with leggings as a tunic on someone short like me (at 5’2″ I’m a petite plus, and guess what, Catherine’s offers a petite line as well!).

Here’s is a full view of the top.

It was easy to find the perfect accessories to complete this look. I chose the Gilded Cranberry Bracelet Set, the Ipanema Faceted Necklace and the Night Mood Cluster Earrings. They brought the look together making it festive but still fitting for day or night.

I also was completely obsessed with Lisa’s super fun and girly look. I mean, seriously, she never misses a beat when styling a look, from head to toe, from her adorable earrings to her magical shoes. Do head over to her blog to read about her look here.

Our thinking was holiday office party, work appropriate but still festive, and I think we delivered very well, thanks to Catherine’s!

Please enjoy all of Lisa’s #HolidayDoubleSlay looks on her blog, and get ready for pyjama shenanigans from all of us on Friday, Dec 8!

Fall Style on Point

As some of you may be aware, in 2016 SexyPlus Clothing partnered with Lisa of the blog Mustangsallytwo to curate a collection from the Canadian-made Artex line sold at the boutique. Well, the 2017 Fall collection is sophisticated, functional, soft and super stylish.

Here is the “scroll” print in two different styles, the sweater with removable cowl neck collar and silhouette design, and the tunic with macramé sleeve detail. I love both, but I just had to have the sweater because of the silhouette peplum-esque shape.

Ambrosia

It’s been a while since my last post, but I am so proud to bring you the Ambrosia. This dress, by one of my favourite recently relaunched brands, IGIGI, is quite spectacular.

When you love a bodycon (a form fitted style that outlines your curves) like I do, but you also are a little self-conscious of your tummy, ruching is your friend. Ruching is a style of pleating that has become popular in recent years, and the reason it is embraced is because it camouflages the area it covers. So if you are drawn to bodycons, but you’re a little shy about your mid-section, look for dresses with ruching, or better yet, try the Ambrosia itself.

With a slightly off-shoulder design, and a sweetheart neckline revealing a slight décolletage, the Ambrosia is a sexy yet still sophisticated cocktail, dinner or date option.

Given the time of year and approaching Spring weather, I decided to style it with a cream coloured wedge sandal and accessorize with ruby and cream accents.

The large Ruby Multi Chain Faceted Teardrop Crystal Necklace Set elevates the look to a more formal level. And the Sophie Multi-wear shawl by designer Joseph Ribkoff provides a layer of elegance and ties in with the sandals.

The Ambrosia dress comes in black and teal as well, in sizes 14-36.

#HolidayDoubleSlay with MustangSallyTwo

I am so excited to share this totally cool collab that I was involved in with my friend and blogger babe Lisa of Mustangsallytwo. We were talking about her upcoming holiday look book a few weeks ago and the idea of combining each of her festive looks with a fellow blogger or model was born, so each day this week she has been sharing a unique look featuring a different brand in each post. It’s called the Holiday Double Slay, and it’s been causing quite a merry stir since Monday.

Here’s a recap of the beautiful, sassy, sparkly looks she’s shared so far:

Monday: Lisa and Thera, wearing Lane Bryant

Tuesday: Lisa and Caterina, wearing SexyPlus (a design by Kiyonna)

Wednesday: Lisa and Sarah, wearing Torrid

Photo credit: Robert Skuja Photography (left and right) Photo credit: Stefanie Augusteijn (centre)

And….THURSDAY is Lisa and ME wearing SWAK (Sealed with a Kiss Designs)!!!

I was so inspired by Lisa’s holiday project and delighted to be included. I love to create and I just knew we would have bumper to bumper fun.

We are wearing the Carmen dress which is a sheath dress with colour blocking and mesh detail at the top.

The black side panels are a chic optical benefit because they help enhance an hourglass silhouette.

I am wearing the 1X and the fit is true to size. Lisa is wearing the 5X. I LOVE and appreciate that SWAK is devoted to the plus size woman and manufactures accurate sizes up to 6X.

The sweetheart shaped mesh top ads a sexy feel to the look and I would recommend wearing a strapless bra for a smooth unencumbered presentation. I’m smitten with how the mesh tends to have a ruched look too because of the pleating on the neckline hem.

I loVe the deep V plunge at the back which gives the dress that “watch me walk away” appeal.

To contrast Lisa’s choice of a black pump, I went with a sexy lace-up medium-heeled faux-suede boot.

Then, for warmth and coverage I chose a sweater cardi with faux fur collar for that cozy yet glamorous flair.

The statement necklace is an oldie but definitely gave my look some sparkle and decor.

I am wearing shapewear of course, size 1X.

And these photos! What can I say, I am so impressed with the work of Robert Skuja of Robert Skuja Photography for making me feel beautifully captured.

So stay tuned for the rest of Lisa’s Holiday Double Slay campaign with Nakitende Esther on Friday and Amanda Montgomery on Saturday. Thank you Lisa for the gift of creating this with you. Click here for Lisa’s review of this dress on her blog.

Wishing you all a magical Christmas, whatever that means to you.
