Consign Your Curves

Being in this industry has its perks. One of them is being invited to sell and shop at the annual Consign Your Curves sale in Guelph, Ontario.

It’s my second year as a seller and I love being a part of it. So many women come together to celebrate and shop plus size clothing in a body positive environment. Bloggers, models, consumers, friends; all united on one day to shop and sell their gently-used and brand new clothing from their own personal closets, at amazing deals. Seriously, some of the brands and styles are to die for.

Created and directed by Carlie Roberts, pictured below (left), it’s a must-attend event.

IMG_1967

This year I picked up a few great pieces. One of them being this GAP dress sold at Melissa Shannon‘s rack. I am a sucker for fluorescent and maxis, and for $15 this one was a done deal for me.

IMG_2615

With a gentle rope belt and pockets, this strapless smock is just so relaxed and screams summer vacation. It just makes me want to get a pedi and a pina colada.

To accessorize it, I would probably go light on the jewelry and grab a chiffon scarf instead. It compliments the outfit, the sentiment, and provides a little shoulder coverage if needed.

I got some new summer sandals from Ardene in a lovely nude with a centre strap of bling. So pretty! They fit my wide ankles easily.

I hope to see many of your at next year’s sale. Come and say hi and shop my closet! Special thanks to Carlie and all her volunteers for making this great event come to life and serve so many ladies.

Curvy Expo 2016

It’s the year of curves, and I am so excited to introduce you to Curvy Expo:

  • A one day event to celebrate curves.
  • A fashion show featuring Canadian top models, with every look on the runway featuring sizes 12 and above.
  • Exhibitors showcasing everything for the size 12+ community.
  • Curvy blogger meet & greet.

It’s all happening Saturday, May 14, 2016 starting at 10am till 6pm, with fashion shows at NOON and 4pm. I had the chance to speak with founder Meghan Bradley, and here’s what she had to say about her passion that inspired the creation of the expo, her thoughts on beauty, and a why this is so important in the Canadian landscape.

Final of shopping sketch for exhibitor page

Q. Why did you create Curvy Expo?

Meghan: I always imagined what it would feel like to go to a mall as a size 6 and have every store cater to my size.  I have never been a straight size so this is something I have never experienced.  I wanted to create a mini mall environment for the curvy woman where everything was in size 12+.  All the vendors at Curvy Expo are selling/promoting plus sizes, the attendees are fellow curvy women and we can all experience that feeling of having everything that is available to us, we are taking over the mall, so to speak, even if it is just one day.  We would finally be in the right place at the right time!

Q. Why do think Canada needs this?

Meghan: I think we have to make plus size accessible, available and own the term.  I am tall, I am blonde, I am plus size and I have brown eyes.  To me, the plus size term is simply one of the many descriptions I use to define myself.  Society has put the stigma on the word, but I think we need to re-claim it, own it and re-define it to what we want.  Plus size is sexy, it is confidant, it is fit, it is feminine.  Canada needs a show like this so that we can all celebrate our size and enjoy all that the world has to offer plus sizes.  We need to come together and feel good about ourselves and being plus size is not a term we are afraid to use.

Q. What’s in it for the curvy consumer? Why should they attend?

Meghan: Going back to the average trip to the mall, the plus size customer gets offered very little.  Even if you are on the smaller side of plus, size 12, 14…your size is still limited and shopping is no fun.  The curvy consumer will benefit from learning what curvy retailers have to offer in their size and see the selection that is available to them.  Plus size fashion has come a long way and the styles are on trend and they fit the curvy woman’s shape.

Curvy fashion isn’t about concealing your shape, it is about celebrating it.

She will feel that her size is just as beautiful and she has just as much selection, if she knows where to shop.  There are also two big fashion shows, one at noon and then the show is repeated at 4:00 p.m. – There will be over 60 looks in each show from swim wear to bridal and everything in between. The curvy consumer will meet some of her favourite bloggers and enjoy free seminars.  There is even a Zumba class!

Q. How do you define beauty?

Meghan: Beauty, for me, is the woman that owns it.  She holds her head high, she walks with confidence and she knows exactly who she is.  She has her own style and she is content in herself.  When I meet women like this, I know I am in the presence of a beautiful woman!

Q. How does Curvy Expo support the plus size woman, the industry and small businesses serving this market?

Meghan: Curvy Expo is for everyone in the plus size industry.  Whether you are the leading national retailer or an independent boutique, you have a place at Curvy Expo.  It is important for the women attending this event to get to know all that is available to her in her community.  Local shops, national shops and everything in between.  There are also services at the show like Lady Luck Pin Up who specializes in photographing women of all shapes and sizes.

The curvy consumer should leave Curvy Expo and feel that she has enjoyed a day that was just for her.

She found a few new places to shop, she saw styles on the runway that inspired her and she met some great bloggers and other curvy women.  She may even have a little glow, after dancing a Zumba class at the end of the day!

Nicolette Mason for Addition Elle

On February 25, 2016 I attended the Nicolette Mason dress collection launch for Addition Elle at their downtown Toronto store. What a lovely event! Additon Elle and the downtown team went all out with beautiful decor and treats to compliment the totally girly collection, and the personality of Nicolette herself.

The collection, as described by Nicolette, is wearable and special, ranging from work to evening, sexy, well constructed and an expression of freedom.

IMG_7177 r1

There are 6 pieces in the collection, with each a unique style that speaks to a different side of our multi-faceted girly-ness. And I LOVE that the marketing team at Addition Elle decided to keep her tattoos visible in the photos.

I tried on the Janet dress, a bodycon with beautiful lace trim. There’s a lot of lace out there, and I really loved how Nicolette designed this dress with the lace shoulder straps that provide a stricking texture and contrast against the skin. It was kindof enchanted forest meets femme fatale.

The other styles were lovely, and here’s Sarah trying the flowing and uber feminine Gabi dress.

IMG_7173 r1

The care and craftsmanship that went into these designs is obvious. Bravo Nicolette!

She was lovely, kind and super approachable. I am so glad I had the chance to meet this body activist and plus size fashion blogger in person.

Thank you Nicolette and Addition Elle and congrats to the downtown team for a delightful fashion event.

[Totally unrelated sidebar] – have you seen their Spring lingerie? Addition Elle bras are my favourite because they are well-constructed, affordable, comfortable, provide great support and they’re BEYOND pretty. I mean, pink and orange everything please.

Stylish. Sexy. Rue.

About a year ago I discovered this new curve-hugging, head-turning clothing brand called Rue 107. Their Instagram album had me hypnotized with vibrant patterns, bold cuts and confident curves flaunting their stuff.

Untitled-1

I clicked over to their website and saw that they had a wholesale program and promptly submitted my application to offer the line at my boutique, SexyPlus Clothing. Weeks passed, and months turned into a year before I finally heard back from them. They had revamped their wholesale program and were ready to consider SexyPlus as an approved retailer. I was ecstatic!

After carefully evaluating my company, they agreed that Rue 107 would be a perfect addition to my collection and approved SexyPlus Clothing as the FIRST and ONLY boutique in Canada to offer the line. I was thrilled! You see, I’ve always offered unique cocktail dresses, club wear and lingerie, and recently introduced the Point Zero Curvy / Affordable Casual Collection at SexyPlus, but felt that I was still missing this segment of fashion-forward, rule-breaking styles with a unique urban retro flair. Rue 107 was the answer.

But I wanted to introduce the line with a splash, and Annika of the blog The Stylish Reid immediately came to mind because to me, her style epitomizes urban retro flair and how fabulous confidence can look. She has styled many outstanding looks featuring vintage pieces with modern accessories and when I reached out to her, well, she jumped at the opportunity to collaborate. As a long time client of SexyPlus Clothing, Annika strives to support women as well as local independent businesses whenever she can, so this was a natural fit.

We got together, note pads and smart phones in hand to plan our new collaboration and that’s how “Stylish. Sexy. Rue.” was born.

I asked Annika to select and style 4 pieces from their current line. She chose the Breana, the Sylvie and the Vicky bodycon ruffle off-shoulder dresses, and the super daring Miss Rose bodysuit. We then set a date for a downtown Toronto photoshoot and met with plus size models Sarah Taylor, Caterina Moda and Kristina Samuels on Dec 12.

With a 9am start time, we met with our makeup artist Michelle (who found us on Instagram the night before), and she set out to beautify our gorgeous crew.

Michelle was professional, easy to work with, and super talented. She allowed each model to personalize some aspects of their look while keeping in line with our overall fierce, feminine glam theme.

IMG_8765 R

Annika styled each look perfectly. She chose accessories and footwear for each model, and herself, to bring our vision to life. Her theme was “Sex and the City” meets urban curvy babes.

Featured below, Sarah wearing the Sylvie dress, Annika wearing the Breana dress, Kristina wearing the Vicky dress and Caterina wearing the Miss Rose Bodysuit.

Even though it was super chilly that day, and there was a lot of relocating, the models, Annika and our photographer Elliot were absolute troopers in bracing the cold and maintaining great attitudes throughout the long and exhausting day. Hey, modeling ain’t easy and a good photographer sometimes has to get on the ground. Annika recaps the project from her perspective on her blog here.

The final result was pure magic. To see how it all came together in these amazing images was so gratifying.

dsc02934_23411937169_o23697440101_6d7b3235fc_odsc03141_23779884015_o

Each person brought something special to the project – their skill, but also their heart, and for that I am truly grateful. It reminds me that I chose the right profession, and that despite ups and downs which are an unfortunate but natural part of small business, I love what I do. I mean, working with bloggers and models, coordinating fashion photo shoots, and reminding hundreds of women each day that their curves are beautiful…? I’m a lucky girl.

dsc03168_23697440391_o

The final component to bring this project full circle was a meet & greet, or ‘Shop & Sip’ event at SexyPlus Clothing where customers were invited to come and try the new line, be styled by Annika, and enjoy a girls night of shopping and champagne. On Jan 3, we did just that, and what a wonderful evening it was.

IMG_0611

Our campaign models came out and tried on different Rue 107 styles alongside our customers.

Caterina and Annika did a switcheroo, trying on each others’ styles.

Shoppers enjoyed champagne & treats…

And tried on something new…

The best part was the positive energy and support that was felt throughout this entire project, and during our special soirée.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank the contributors, customers, models, Rue 107 and especially Annika who brought her creativity and professionalism to this project.

Annika will be selecting the Spring Rue 107 Collection for SexyPlus Clothing boutique so stay tuned for the next chapter in bringing more selection and exciting plus size fashion to Canada.

Love, Stefanie

Body Confidence Canada Awards

The Body Confidence Canada Awards (BCCAs) acknowledge Canada-based recipients actively fighting against stereotypes, judgements, policies, and discrimination that attempt to label and discredit marginalized bodies.

In 2014, I was so fortunate to win a BCCA award, and it was incredibly meaningful for me, especially in the fashion and beauty industry, where there is little formal accreditation. You can watch my acceptance speech here.

As a previous winner, I was honored to receive an invitation to this year’s event, the 2015 Body Confidence Canada Awards to celebrate new winners and see old friends.

The 2015 winners are:

ALICIA VIANGA, Women’s Health, Philanthropy, Fashion

MAYA McDONALD, Youth, Social Justice & Human Rights

AMRIT SINGH, R.Ac, Health & Wellness, Advocacy, Arts

TIINA VEER, BA RMT RYT, Health & Wellness, Activism

ERIN HUSTON, Youth, Policy, Equity & Inclusion

MO HANDAHU, Arts & Culture, Media

What a stellar evening it was!!! Set in the rustic-chic ballroom of The 519 in downtown Toronto, Ontario, it felt very posh but the vibe was so down to earth and warm. With super charismatic and hilarious host Zahra Dhanani, special guests Dvorah Silverman, Girls Action Foundation and Lisa Hanaam (Heath Editor), GLOW Magazine, shiver-enducing entertainment by Juno Award winner Simone Denny, touching speeches by the winners, and emotional tributes by the BCCA founders Jill Andrew and Aisha Fairclough, the evening was memorable, fun and inspiring.

Melissa McCarthy Plus Size Clothing has Arrived!

As some of you already know from my over-active Instagram feed, I was lucky to attend the Melissa McCarthy “Seven 7” Plus Size Clothing launch at Penningtons a few weeks ago. WHAT AN EPIC EVENT! Elegantly catered, attended by local AND celebrity bloggers, and bee-you-ti-ful plus size clothing.

With a mini fashion show modeled by bloggers, my admiration soon turned into purchases when I saw Melissa’s line styled so expertly.

The blogger & model line up (from left to right): Chastity from Garner Style, Gail from Fab Four Fashion, Jessica from Skorch Magazine, Assa from My Curves & Curls, Jessica from Clothes & Shit, Garcia from Flaws of Couture, Karen from Curvy Canadian, Sasha from Flaws of Couture, Sarah from Ravings by Rae and Chante from Everything Curvy & Chic.

Superstar blogger Chastity of Garner Style and moi!

After enjoying the fashion show presented by Erica on Fashion, and schmoozing with other guests, I dove in to shopping and trying on Melissa’s new line. The fabrics were good quality and luxurious to the touch, and the fit was bang on. I fell in love with this reversible poncho – talk about casual yet chic!

IMG_8456

In contrast to how Assa had styled it with the black side out, and white jeans (which was so appealing), I styled it with these shiny spandex leggings (à la Olivia Newton John) and the cream side of the poncho out to show how pretty it is either way.

And I love clothing that can be worn several ways because I feel like I’m getting more mileage for my spend, right?

IMG_8473

Wondering what the words are? Well Melissa didn’t just put any old script font on it – she wanted it to have meaning. The words “Happy Happy Joy Joy” do indeed make me feel great wearing it.

You can actually wear it as a top on it’s own because it covers you adequately.

And don’t be deceived, it’s actually much nicer in person than on the website, shown below.

I just LOVE it and I can’t wait for the weather to wear it. Thanks Melissa and Penningtons – you definately hit the mark with this lovely plus size clothing line. And again, a special thanks to my Mom for taking these great photos!

A Blogaversary to Remember: The Stylish Reid

Last night I was super lucky, and stoked, to attend the one year blogaversary of the Canadian plus size fashion blog by Annika Reid, “The Stylish Reid”.

Annika is a fascinating woman; Mom, designer, blogger, friend, and business woman. In 2008, she set off as a designer, bringing stunning plus size fashion and custom-made gowns to her fans and clients. She has evolved over the years to become a blogger/vlogger extraordinaire.

Last night (Sunday, June 29, 2015), she invited friends, family, collaborators, bloggers and clients to celebrate the event in style, sisterhood and love. Here’s a look at the evening through my eyes, and my amateur lens.

Before the crowd arrived, Annika was busy getting every detail just right.

IMG_1943 IMG_1968

The truly decadent catering included delicious finger foods and abundant desserts. Annika sure knows how to treat her guests; it just kept coming and coming!

IMG_1921 IMG_1922 IMG_2017 IMG_2001

Annika presented some of her best designs from past collections, and new styles from her capsule series.

IMG_2006 IMG_2009  IMG_2093 IMG_2113 IMG_2237 IMG_2015

IMG_2168

Makeup was done by Annika’s little sister Tamara (on left below, and her work on model Ro in middle, and models Julienne and Sarah on right).

IMG_2207 IMG_2233 IMG_1970

Her host Joy challenged the crowd to play some trivia for prizes…

IMG_2242 IMG_2042 IMG_2031

Performances like spoken word by Joy Oke, songs by Pure Ivory, burlesque dancing by Belles Jumelles, and music by Tricia Campbell were outstanding and thought provoking, sending messages of beauty diversity and female empowerment.

IMG_2134   IMG_2057 IMG_2070 IMG_2080

Guests arrived in high style, relishing the occasion to dress up…

IMG_1977 IMG_1971 IMG_1960 IMG_1942 IMG_1932  IMG_2231 IMG_1982 IMG_2135

But the overwhelming sense of love and support was truly felt and seen at the end of the show, when everyone came over to hug and congratulate the lady of the hour….

IMG_2226 IMG_2219 IMG_2217 IMG_2210 IMG_2208 IMG_2204 IMG_2199 IMG_2197 IMG_2193 IMG_2188 IMG_2184 IMG_2178 IMG_2270

Annika thanked friends for their support and generosity, and honored sponsors who made the evening possible.

IMG_1990 IMG_2151

Always by her side, Annika’s daughter Aniyah…

IMG_1956

It was such a lovely evening and the sense of joy and pride for Annika was genuine. I truly enjoy reading her blog and watching her videos on YouTube because she combines her passion for fashion with an honest insight into her lifestyle.
