This post is a special one because I actually collaborated with my one and only sister, Melanie Chin, to make it happen. I wanted a different landscape for my next feature, and she suggested the equestrian centre where she coaches. How lucky am I to have a sister who works with horses?!
This is the beautiful Hockley Hills School of Horsemanship, nestled in the picturesque Ontario countryside, in Orangeville.
Although totally inadequately dressed for riding of any sort, my Joan Maxi Dress by SWAK (Sealed with a Kiss Designs) was perfect for posing, being admired and being a Goddess among these beautiful, graceful horses.
As you can see it’s a little too long and I would definitely need to get it shortened, but the good thing is that it can accommodate many of my taller plus size comrades.
It is such a graceful dress and hits the spot in all areas of design elements that are important to me:
- v-neck: check! Reveal a slight décolletage, and showcase a nice statement necklace
- sleeves: check! Lately I’ve just been a little less comfortable being bare-armed, so I am gravitating towards sleeves. It may only be for a season, and for no good reason, but it’s making me love these kimono style, barely there sleeves.
- empire body: check! Empire waist help to define your silhouette and in my case as a petite plus size woman, they give me the illusion of a bit more height.
- back tie: check! Always nice to be able to cinch the look to your own silhouette. Kinda makes the dress customizable, and the long sashes add a nice detail in back.
I coordinated this look with a thin yellow belt, which is unexpected but blends nicely with the soft, happy, feminine, palette. And one of my favourite statement necklaces showcasing oversized flowers in pastels of coral, yellow, pink, and lime green.
A summery laser-cut wedge kept the look light. And the beauty next to me, well, her name is Jewel and we love her.
I often hear that petite gals feel that they can’t wear maxi dresses, and although I always respect any personal choice and preference, I hope they don’t feel that way because of height. Ain’t I proof that petites do the Maxi justice, even if we have to carry it a bit? Have I earned the title, Blushing Goddess?
The Joan Maxi Dress is also available in other colours: charcoal, cranberry, turquoise, navy, green and black. SWAK is excellent at offering affordable, trendy plus size clothing that is meant to be really lived in.
Special thanks and love to my sister Melanie Chin, who was so enthusiastic in setting this up, and for her superb photography. She’s a pretty amazing woman, not to mention my mud hero.
She is always so supportive of me and my endeavors even though we live and work in very different worlds. She is also one of the most established, commended and gifted riding coaches in Ontario.
She can be contacted here for riding lessons.
