IMG_0321Why do we wear jewelry? Why do we decorate our bodies with tattoos? Why do we dye our
hair? It’s all part of expressing our individuality. But that desire to express ourselves must come from a place of self-confidence, in my opinion. When I was 25 years old, something clicked and I realized that, despite the parts of my body that I didn’t like or had issue with, as a package, I was enough. I was great. I was sexy. I decided to start looking at myself as a glorious package, as a whole, and not focus on the parts that I found less than “flattering”. Because despite our best efforts to accept and celebrate our bodies in an increasingly body positive culture, we are female and inevitably we are going to find areas or things
about ourselves to criticize. And that’s just real. But the important thing is to be fair to yourself and look at yourself as a perfectly imperfect package.

I decided then to get a tattoo. Something abstract that represented to me, and me alone, that my body was worth “decorating”. And that’s how I have lived my life since then.

Jewelry, to me, is an extension of that philosophy. I wouldn’t decorate something I didn’t appreciate. So I decorate ME as a way of celebrating ME. And whether it’s jewelry or how you style your hair, or the expensive lingerie you wear underneath, it’s important to invest in, and celebrate YOU.

This Teardrop Pendant in 10t yellow, white and rose gold from Michael Hill is a way for me to recognize that I am worthy, that I am beautiful, and will therefore be adorned in beauty.
Michael Hill jewellers was founded in 1979 with a promise to craft distinct and appealing jewellery. They are one of very few jewellery retailers that have an in-house team of master craftsmen – dedicated to creating future heirlooms and keepsakes while continuously perfecting their craft.

From a customer experience perspective, the packaging is so important and I love the beautiful purple box with brown satin ribbon that my pendant arrived in.

Wearing it made me feel special, and beautiful. I chose the tri-colored gold design because it compliments my wedding ring, which is so special to me. I like the fact that dual or tri-colored jewelry can be worn with either silver or gold thereby making it more versatile.

Michael Hill offers a vast selection of jewelry pieces in all price ranges. Their necklaces and pendant are particularly tempting, and with Valentine’s Day around the corner, their Most Loved selection is definitely worth a gander, with pieces starting at CDA $29.

Here are some of my favs…

Unfortunately I did not find any rings for women above a size 8 so they are not for chubby fingers, but Michael Hill offers an extensive array of jewelry for all our other parts.

Point Zero, You Had Me at Curvy

If you’re a fan of mine you know that I’m a big fan of Point Zero Curvy. I discovered this affordable, casual brand last August through my boutique SexyPlus Clothing. I was over the moon excited to offer this line to my customers, and inevitably, I end of scoring a few pieces for myself.

This post features a great way to take basics, and layer them in seasonal ways.

Take a:

  • Chevron cami
  • Oversized cape
  • pair of leggings
  • and some booties

and you have a comfortable, cozy-up, movie-watching outfit. But these pieces can give you way more mileage. The cape, for instance, is a great piece to keep at work for those chilly days, and the cami is a light weight piece that can be paired with all those black or solid cardis and jackets most of us already have.

The faux leather detailing on the cape gives it a touch of urban edge and ups the style factor, as is the case with most Point Zero designs.

The cami is long enough to wear with leggings and I love it’s slight asymmetrical hemline.

I chose burgundy leggings for this look but it would have worked fabulously with black ones, or with jeans.

This is a comfy, but not “bummy” weekend casual look.

The adorable booties are from Ardene – that’s right, the accessories super chain. They have great footwear in regular sizes so for me, even though I’m plus size in the body, my feet a regular so I can actually enjoy cute pieces from this store. And they were on sale for $20. No brainer, right?

For the jewelry, I could have gone with either a round necklace to complement the neckline of the cami, or a long pendant which is what I chose. I borrowed it from my blogger buddy Lisa, and it’s from Lane Bryant. They’re a US chain of stores that offer plus size clothing, footwear and accessories.

So tell me, what does your “casual” look like? Do you default to the trusted yoga pants or do you still put the effort in coordinating like you would for the office? Sometimes it feels good to put some effort into your casual looks and it can entirely change how you approach each day.

Special thanks to Lisa of the blog Mustangsallytwo for taking these pics for me.

Resort Style Swimwear Trends for 2016

Guest post by Brittany Medlin

Spring is just around the corner, and some of you may be planning trips to warmer locales, which means it’s not too early to start planning your swimsuit shopping strategy. Luckily, this post has several suggestions for full-figured beauties who are interested in staying abreast of trends while also looking and feeling great. Before it’s time for a little fun in the sun, take a peek at our wearable, yet trendy, suggestions for a cool and confident swim season.

HarpersBazaar.com recently recreated iconic swimsuit moments with modern day beachwear and the lovely Elizabeth Taylor graced their inspiration list in a white retro one piece. Where classically styled swimwear is concerned, we’ve got you covered (literally) with this beautiful curve enhancing black one piece. As a nod to the iconic actress, we’ve chosen the twist front swimsuit pictured above by Shore Club for its shirred waist and figure flattering features.

Stripes are another popular pattern seen cropping up on the runways for spring 2016, which is why we’ve recommended the zip front terry cloth cover-up hoodie pictured above. The zipper front adds functionality and versatility, making it easy to put on and take off, or you can simply leave it open. Plus, the adjustable side ties allow you to decide how much thigh and hip to show. Wear this alone or with linen shorts or pants sans swimsuit for a cute, resort-style outfit that’s on trend.

The sporty colorblock style is here to stay and WomanWithin.com suggests trying the navy and coral one piece by Swim 365. You’ll feel confident and curvaceous in this swimsuit thanks to the slimming tummy control panel and the strategically placed side stripes that frame your chest and torso and give the illusion of a longer and leaner midsection. Pair this with a baseball cap or visor and a pair of board shorts to complete your athletic resort look.

The popular high-low hem has been a staple in women’s fashion for several seasons now and is here to stay. The cover up we’ve chosen this time around is the epitome of effortlessly chic resort style and will look great on or off the beach. Wear the black high-low shirt pictured above over just a swimsuit, or while you’re out and about by layering the sheer top over a camisole and bottoms. Linen pants, maxi skirts, or Bermuda shorts would all work well.

Floral print swimwear graced InStyle.com’s resort wear trends list for 2016 and we’re glad to see the feminine patterns back for the season. The vibrant orange and pink blooms on the Poppies sarong front swimsuit by Aquabelle will brighten your day and accentuate the positive when it comes to your figure. With a beautiful sweetheart neckline and full tummy and upper body support thanks to the AquaSculpt system that’s designed to whittle up to 1 ¾” off your waist, you can feel confident all season long.

Now that you’ve had a chance to see our suggestions for spring swimwear based on popular predictions, you’ll have a head start on what to wear cabana side this year. Don’t be afraid to include your own spin on what we’ve already presented, and remember to choose what makes you feel good rather than rely solely on a set of rules. Confidence is and always will be your best accessory!

Pull Over Ma’am

“Pull Over Ma’am” – not something you ever want to hear, but I couldn’t resist this cute play on words to introduce my latest look featuring a pullover blouse by Point Zero Curvy and how I styled this ‘arresting’ outfit.

My problem with Point Zero Curvy is that I love their line – a little too much. After so many years of not being able to find casual plus size clothing that was actually cute, trendy, with a great fit and affordable, I’m kindof addicted to this line.

The Chiffon Pullover blouse is an easy to wear style with faux leather and zipper detailing on the shoulders. It just gives it that extra edge, which is what Point Zero Curvy does so well on all their pieces.

I paired the top with the Crackle Leather Look Leggings also by Point Zero Curvy. They are sexy and sassy and make the look a little more urban. And they’re so affordable at $49CDA at SexyPlus Clothing.

When I was getting ready to shoot this look with fellow blogger Lisa of Mustangsallytwo, I wanted one more piece to complete the outfit. A jacket or cardi or something to finish it off, and she handed me this cape that she had purchased from Society + which was a little too small for her, but was a perfect fit for me (size 16).

It ended up being PERFECT for this look, giving it a polished office feel. It’s like a blazer but with openings for the arms, so it’s not confining like a traditional blazer and drapes loosely in back.

It’s comfortable, structured and slightly superhero, when the breeze is just right during a shoot.

I borrowed these earrings from Lisa to finish the look. Due to the detail and high neckline of the top, I didn’t think it needed much more than earrings. Sometimes, less is more, right?

All outfit links are below, so happy shopping if you want to get this chic and affordable look.

Special thanks to Lisa of the blog Mustangsallytwo for offering the awesome cape and for taking these lovely pics.

Stylish. Sexy. Rue.

About a year ago I discovered this new curve-hugging, head-turning clothing brand called Rue 107. Their Instagram album had me hypnotized with vibrant patterns, bold cuts and confident curves flaunting their stuff.

I clicked over to their website and saw that they had a wholesale program and promptly submitted my application to offer the line at my boutique, SexyPlus Clothing. Weeks passed, and months turned into a year before I finally heard back from them. They had revamped their wholesale program and were ready to consider SexyPlus as an approved retailer. I was ecstatic!

After carefully evaluating my company, they agreed that Rue 107 would be a perfect addition to my collection and approved SexyPlus Clothing as the FIRST and ONLY boutique in Canada to offer the line. I was thrilled! You see, I’ve always offered unique cocktail dresses, club wear and lingerie, and recently introduced the Point Zero Curvy / Affordable Casual Collection at SexyPlus, but felt that I was still missing this segment of fashion-forward, rule-breaking styles with a unique urban retro flair. Rue 107 was the answer.

But I wanted to introduce the line with a splash, and Annika of the blog The Stylish Reid immediately came to mind because to me, her style epitomizes urban retro flair and how fabulous confidence can look. She has styled many outstanding looks featuring vintage pieces with modern accessories and when I reached out to her, well, she jumped at the opportunity to collaborate. As a long time client of SexyPlus Clothing, Annika strives to support women as well as local independent businesses whenever she can, so this was a natural fit.

We got together, note pads and smart phones in hand to plan our new collaboration and that’s how “Stylish. Sexy. Rue.” was born.

I asked Annika to select and style 4 pieces from their current line. She chose the Breana, the Sylvie and the Vicky bodycon ruffle off-shoulder dresses, and the super daring Miss Rose bodysuit. We then set a date for a downtown Toronto photoshoot and met with plus size models Sarah Taylor, Caterina Moda and Kristina Samuels on Dec 12.

With a 9am start time, we met with our makeup artist Michelle (who found us on Instagram the night before), and she set out to beautify our gorgeous crew.

Michelle was professional, easy to work with, and super talented. She allowed each model to personalize some aspects of their look while keeping in line with our overall fierce, feminine glam theme.

Annika styled each look perfectly. She chose accessories and footwear for each model, and herself, to bring our vision to life. Her theme was “Sex and the City” meets urban curvy babes.

Featured below, Sarah wearing the Sylvie dress, Annika wearing the Breana dress, Kristina wearing the Vicky dress and Caterina wearing the Miss Rose Bodysuit.

Even though it was super chilly that day, and there was a lot of relocating, the models, Annika and our photographer Elliot were absolute troopers in bracing the cold and maintaining great attitudes throughout the long and exhausting day. Hey, modeling ain’t easy and a good photographer sometimes has to get on the ground. Annika recaps the project from her perspective on her blog here.

The final result was pure magic. To see how it all came together in these amazing images was so gratifying.

Each person brought something special to the project – their skill, but also their heart, and for that I am truly grateful. It reminds me that I chose the right profession, and that despite ups and downs which are an unfortunate but natural part of small business, I love what I do. I mean, working with bloggers and models, coordinating fashion photo shoots, and reminding hundreds of women each day that their curves are beautiful…? I’m a lucky girl.

The final component to bring this project full circle was a meet & greet, or ‘Shop & Sip’ event at SexyPlus Clothing where customers were invited to come and try the new line, be styled by Annika, and enjoy a girls night of shopping and champagne. On Jan 3, we did just that, and what a wonderful evening it was.

Our campaign models came out and tried on different Rue 107 styles alongside our customers.

Caterina and Annika did a switcheroo, trying on each others’ styles.

Shoppers enjoyed champagne & treats…

And tried on something new…

The best part was the positive energy and support that was felt throughout this entire project, and during our special soirée.

So, from the bottom of my heart, I thank the contributors, customers, models, Rue 107 and especially Annika who brought her creativity and professionalism to this project.

Annika will be selecting the Spring Rue 107 Collection for SexyPlus Clothing boutique so stay tuned for the next chapter in bringing more selection and exciting plus size fashion to Canada.

Love, Stefanie
