A Blogaversary to Remember: The Stylish Reid

Last night I was super lucky, and stoked, to attend the one year blogaversary of the Canadian plus size fashion blog by Annika Reid, “The Stylish Reid”.

Annika is a fascinating woman; Mom, designer, blogger, friend, and business woman. In 2008, she set off as a designer, bringing stunning plus size fashion and custom-made gowns to her fans and clients. She has evolved over the years to become a blogger/vlogger extraordinaire.

Last night (Sunday, June 29, 2015), she invited friends, family, collaborators, bloggers and clients to celebrate the event in style, sisterhood and love. Here’s a look at the evening through my eyes, and my amateur lens.

Before the crowd arrived, Annika was busy getting every detail just right.

The truly decadent catering included delicious finger foods and abundant desserts. Annika sure knows how to treat her guests; it just kept coming and coming!

IMG_1921 IMG_1922 IMG_2017 IMG_2001

Annika presented some of her best designs from past collections, and new styles from her capsule series.

Makeup was done by Annika’s little sister Tamara (on left below, and her work on model Ro in middle, and models Julienne and Sarah on right).

Her host Joy challenged the crowd to play some trivia for prizes…

IMG_2242 IMG_2042 IMG_2031

Performances like spoken word by Joy Oke, songs by Pure Ivory, burlesque dancing by Belles Jumelles, and music by Tricia Campbell were outstanding and thought provoking, sending messages of beauty diversity and female empowerment.

IMG_2134   IMG_2057 IMG_2070 IMG_2080

Guests arrived in high style, relishing the occasion to dress up…

IMG_1977 IMG_1971 IMG_1960 IMG_1942 IMG_1932  IMG_2231 IMG_1982 IMG_2135

But the overwhelming sense of love and support was truly felt and seen at the end of the show, when everyone came over to hug and congratulate the lady of the hour….

Annika thanked friends for their support and generosity, and honored sponsors who made the evening possible.

Always by her side, Annika’s daughter Aniyah…

It was such a lovely evening and the sense of joy and pride for Annika was genuine. I truly enjoy reading her blog and watching her videos on YouTube because she combines her passion for fashion with an honest insight into her lifestyle.

Short Girls CAN Wear Maxi Dresses – a Tropical Playground

Happy Tuesday loves! First of all, I wanted to THANK all my new followers – I am so happy that you like my blog so far and truly enjoy reading it. That means EVERYTHING to me and makes it all worthwhile.

Today’s post features a lovely plus size maxi dress from SexyPlus Clothing. I specifically chose this dress to show you that petite girls CAN wear maxis – coming from my compact little 5’1′ perspective. And yes, investing in a little hem shortening is worth it.

The Tropical Garden Maxi Dress is custom made for the boutique. Each year, the designer of this dress, named Dream Dance, comes up with an array of beautiful new fabrics, and clients like SexyPlus Clothing get to choose which styles we want in those fabrics. This means that the combination of the particular fabric (the Tropical Garden) on this particular dress style (the Celebrity Maxi) is unique to the boutique, which is important because sometimes it’s nice to have a piece of clothing that is not mass produced and worn by everyone.

What I love about the Tropical Garden Dress:

1) thick shoulder straps that are bra friendly – score!

2) an empire waist that defines the smallest part of my body and makes the skirt of the dress fall easily over my tummy

3) the black piping around the bust ads a contrast that enables me to coordinate the look with black accessories like the belt and lace vest, and a black sandal

4) the length! Maxis are awesome because they are so easy to style – it’s one piece and there’s your outfit.

I went for a lovely statement necklace that just had the perfect color combination.

And I couldn’t resist these crazy strappy wedges I got a few years ago in some ghetto mall. Like the necklace, the colors were just too perfect to pass up. I could have gone for a simple black sandal, or any color shoe and that’s what’s so great about this dress: the versatility and the options it presents for styling.

So do you still think you’re too short for maxi dresses?

Maybe you need to sleep on it…

Let’s not lie down on the issue too long…

WAKE UP! Get yourself into a MAXI dress and be a goddess!

Stay tuned for my next blog post featuring my guest the gorgeous Selina (who you met recently) in an Addition Elle swimsuit.

Yes, that’s my bra.

As a blogger, stylist and plus size clothing store owner, I know it’s important to see outfits on different body shapes and sizes. It’s how we relate, and also how we are inspired to step outside of our personal comfort zones when it comes to style. This is why I am so excited to introduce you to Selina – a fashionista, body positive advocate, and all around girly girl.

We got together to create an outfit that totally stirs things up – something amazing that pushes the boundaries a little. Once we had all accessories in place and she looked at herself in the mirror she said, “I WOULD TOTALLY WEAR THIS TO A CLUB!”. I gotta say, she was stunning. And her confidence was radiant.

Ok, so let’s go through each item.

The shoes. These are a pair of Madden Girl pumps that Selina picked up on sale at Town Shoes. Total princess diva. For this outfit, any number of pumps would have done the trick, or even a blinged-out flat if you’re not into heels.

IMG_0448 r1

Next, the brassière. This is the Geo Dot Print Soft Touch Bra (Déesse Collection) by Additione Elle. And I must say that Addition Elle’s bras have come a LONG way in the last few years. Their bras are not only beautifully designed in the most lovely prints, but they are well structured and supportive. And they’re frequently on sale, so you can’t loose.

IMG_0422 r1

Jewelry. This statement necklace is a piece that Selina brought from her personal collection. The coral color was a perfect way to pick up the colors of the bra, and complement her hair. Don’t be afraid of big bold pieces. The way I shop for jewelry is if I like it, I buy it. Don’t hesitate. Because when the time comes that you need a necklace to complete a look, you won’t be able to find it. That’s just Murphy’s Law.

Next, the Perfect Crop Leggings from SexyPlus Clothing; perfect because they’re slinky soft, opaque, high waisted so they don’t ride down your bum and reach all the way under your bra. Such a simple garment but essential for completing so many looks.

And finally, the item that makes this outfit so dramatic, feminine and FABULOUS is the lace dress cover by SexyPlus Clothing, designed by Joseph Ribkoff. A versatile piece that can be worn as shown, or over a simple tank dress (of any color I might add), or as lingerie, or as a swim cover…And yes, her bra is intentionally showing – what did I say in my last post, make your own rules right?

Undergarments can be sensually stylish and exposed when tastefully coordinated with your outfit.

See how nothing is actually showing but so much is implied? That’s sexy.

Isn’t she gorgeous?

This post wouldn’t be complete without sharing Selina’s “beauty bible”, a Victoria’s Secret pouch filled with essentials like mascara, Taylor Swift mini perfume, Sephora mat stain lipstick, makeup wipes, eye brow pencil. She takes it EVERYWHERE not because she has to, but because she wants to. If a dash of this and a touch-up of that makes you feel good anytime, anywhere, then it IS good.

I really loved working on this project with Selina, and I hope you enjoyed the outfit and seeing a guest curvy gal (5’8″, size 20/22) on my blog. And ladies, Selina is not a professional model; she’s just a girl who has learned – and makes a concerted effort – to treat herself kindly, to spoil herself occasionally, to look at herself in the mirror and think nice things. It’s all part of her commitment to loving herself.

And that hair!!!! Selina provides professional extensions so get in touch with her if you want to experience movie star tresses.

Please comment below – did this outfit inspire you? Could you wear an outfit showing your bra? I would love to hear from you. And I kinda dare you. 😉

Fast Fashion, Frugal Fun. Plus Sizes at Maurices.

The title says it all – Maurices offers trendy fashion at low prices and I do declare I was a happy shopper on my very first visit to this American company with stores in Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan (locator link below). I visited the Georgetown store and it was clean, well organized and the clothing was nicely presented (a refreshing twist from some other ‘fast fashion’ stores that are messy and the racks are over-crowded). The beautifully decorated fittings rooms were a decent size, with plenty of hooks and a big bench. The plus size selection was not as abundant as the regular size selection, but for a store offering all sizes (1-26), it wasn’t bad.

With a mixture of aztec, chevron and bohemian florals, and a medley of cardigans, urban style tops, bottoms, a few dresses, and tons of accessories, the more I browsed and rummaged, the more I found that appealed to me.

I’m really feeling long bohemian cardigans these days, and how they add a dimension to an otherwise simple outfit, so I tried on a few with different tops and dresses. Excuse the low quality pics as these were on-the-spot fitting room selfies.

This navy blue sleeveless long lace cardi was super nice with the printed maxi dress. I loved the multitude of happy colors.

This woven hooded oatmeal long cardi with sleeves was cozy, and just made me feel so summer cottage.

This sleeveless oatmeal cardi made my next outfit come to life – who would have thought that my bra and my basic black capri leggings could look so damn sexy! Oh and the laser cut strappy sandals in this pic, ya, they sell those too, and I got them in nude!

So beautiful right?

I really loved the fresh look the next two fringed cardis created, and the mint one came home with me. Imagine, black leggings, a plain cami or tank top, and one of these. Voila, a trendy new outfit comes to life, and you’ve got arm coverage without looking like you are looking for arm coverage – ladies who are shy about your arms, you know what I’m talking about here.

11424328_10155676966440517_583614811_n 11356177_10155676966390517_1776254086_n 11212488_10155676966385517_631136085_n

They also had some more career, structured pieces like this beautiful turquoise lace zippered jacket.

Coral is one of my favorite colors, maybe because it represents “abundance, energy and happiness”, so I tried these two coral tops and took home the lace one.

11638093_10155676966570517_221059306_n 11421709_10155676966640517_724388619_n

And finally, the outfit you’ve been waiting for, the one I actually left the store wearing (AFTER PAYING FOR IT!), is this abstract print top, adorable sleeveless cropped jean jacket with lace detail, and the coral wedge sandals. Note: The shoes are not wide width, just regular fit.

Having worked in the corporate world for 10 years, and then operating my own boutique, I don’t have a lot of stylish casual clothes and this outfit hit the spot. So now I have some cute options to throw on and easily mix & match for the weekend.

Hey now…me and my chubby fingers are so fly.

I added a small necklace by My Beaded Designs. While I love big bold statement necklaces, you have to know when it’s too much. In this case, we have a mixed-print color palette in the top, and mixed textures of denim and lace in the jacket so something subtle for the neck was in order. I even could have gone without.

And don’t be afraid to mix colors, prints and textures. It’s time to make your own rules.

For instance, you might be inclined to pair this green fringed kimono with a green top, but…

pMAUR1-21114395v275 pMAUR1-20393513v275

…imagine how cool and unexpected it would look with the same top in blue?

Or a blue one with a print? How radical!

I’m so happy that I found Maurices and that I can share with you another option for cute, trendy, affordable plus size clothing in a welcoming shopping enviroment. Oh, and their sizes were bang on – I normally wear a size 16 and their 1X was perfect for me. I didn’t have to size up, which is sometimes the case with trendy brands. In fact, some of the XL in regular sizes actually fit. Way to go Maurices!

The Maurices website is easy to use, the pictures load quickly, and the online plus size selection is pretty good.

So check them out ladies and let me know what you find there. And please send me pics.

See ya later!

Consign Your Curves – Plus Size Closet Sale in Guelph Ontario

WOW – am I ever happy I was lucky enough to participate in the Consign Your Curves (#ConsignYourCurves) plus size closet sale that took place May 30, 2015 in Guelph, Ontario, Canada.

Organized by the charismatic Carlie Roberts, and pulled together by her fabulous team of volunteers and supporters, Consign Your Curves was a HUGE success. This year was the third annual, and we hope it becomes a bi-annual event with Spring and Fall sales.

plus size closet sale consign your curves

If you don’t know what a closet sale is, here’s the reader’s digest – but keep in mind that SO much more goes into making the event successful than what I’ve listed here. Essentially, Carlie invites sellers who consist of bloggers and fashionistas alike to sell their gently used (and some never worn) clothing, jewelry, accessories and footwear at a massive one day sale.

plus size closet sale consign your curves

plus size closet sale consign your curves

This year’s event took place at Three Willows Church in Guelph. Each seller is given a rack, and tags their items with their unique initials. Each seller either has a specific task or helps other sellers as needed. Makeshift changing rooms are created, and the public shops till they drop! All tags are removed and collected when an item is purchased, which are tallied at the end of the day, and each seller is paid their earnings.

What a wonderful concept! The sellers get to turn unworn clothing and fabulous fashion into liquid cash (to purchase more fab fashion I’m sure) and consumers get to access an amazing selection of plus size fashion, in all sizes from 12-32, including some very elusive and valuable designer pieces at a steal of a price. And let’s remember that bloggers are some of the most stylish ladies around, so we’re talking really nice pieces from around the world. Below is blogger Annika from Candi Apple Couture aka The Stylish Reid scoring a HOT peacock Rue 107 bodycon dress.

And here’s a customer trying on one of my pieces, an asymmetrical top that she thought was perfect for going on mat leave. Yes, she bought it, and I think it was something like $8. She was happy.

What I love most is how everyone comes together to make the day successful. Whether you’re a seller, a volunteer or a customer, it doesn’t matter – you just pitch in and help your sister out!

Pull a curtain so a girl can change, pick up a blouse that fell on the floor, make a community Tim’s run, share your fan with your sweaty neighbor.

With so much competitiveness in our day to day lives, and the race to be successful, it’s nice to know that there’s still an overwhelmingly strong sense of unity among us ladies. I felt it and so did the shoppers. I received so much great feedback all day long, despite torrential downpours and a very hot and humid venue.

I met some really cool curvy sisters, like plus model Melissa Shannon, bloggers Mustang Sally and Karyn Johnson of Killer Kurves, and blogger/designer Jessica Biffi among so many others.

It’s always good for my soul to connect with the lovely Sheena Snively – and um, no one can pull off a yellow polka dot head wrap quite as adorably as she can and that’s final. On the right, I’m pictured with blogger gal_from_panada, Sheena and Erica from the blog Erica Exposed.

There were 40 sellers in total – shown here and listed at the end of this post.

I worked the check out table for a few hours in the afternoon, and let me tell you from about 12-3 it was NON STOP. Women were SO happy to find such an amazing, clean, well cared for and unique selection of plus size clothing in so many sizes in one place. At the end of the day, I was delighted to see that about half my rack had sold. As a new blogger, I’m going to use that money to make new purchases to discover and share more plus size brands with you.

A huge thank you to Carlie for creating this event and bringing the opportunity, the fun and the fashion to so many.

Until next year (or maybe the Fall Carlie??? pwetty pwease?), make sure you subscribe to my blog for updates on Consign Your Curves and other plus size events in and around the city or check my Events page regularly.

Love, Stef

Superhero Wedding Flow

My darling husband Howard was asked to be the best man at a friend’s wedding, which is an honor in itself, but the honor for me was to be at his side in the presence of friends and family at this special occasion of love and union.

Howard and I married in 2012, when I was 39 years old, so I spent many years before meeting Howard attending special events by myself and always yearned for a time in my life where I would have my best friend, my man, my partner by my side. That dream has now come true and I love attending events as a couple. I feel endlessly happy, fortunate and proud. We’re a team. It’s us against the world. He’s my hero, and I’m his super ☺️

So Howard’s required attire was a black suit, lime green shirt, and black tie. Easy enough, and of course my Mom found the perfect lime green flower for us both to wear as an added summer accessory.

IMG_0048 IMG_0050

I decided on a lovely black dress I’ve had for years with a woven chain link keyhole neckline, shark-bite hemline (which I’ve always found very flattering on me), and to bring in the lime color, I borrowed this chiffon scarf from my Mom and gently pinned it in place so that I would be comfortable and not worry about it falling off my shoulders all afternoon. My sandals are a strappy wedge pair I got at Le Chateau warehouse a few years ago, and they’re comfortable for all day wear since the incline is quite manageable. Wedges are a fantastic way to get the height & the sexiness, without the pain or the harmful impact on your knees and joints.

IMG_9991 sm cropped

My loving Mom who is ALWAYS there to help adjust, complete, tuck, pin and bestow her loving touch upon everything.

IMG_9988 IMG_9986

Howard is a man of few words, but the expression on his face when he saw me made me feel like a beautiful lime fairy goddess, and I’ve learned to read and adsorb those expressions rather to wait for an actual compliment to be verbalized. I felt wonderful.

The wedding was perfect and the day was splendid. It brought me such joy to share this special day with the bride and groom, Neil and Kanesha.

I look forward to sharing so many more life moments like this with Howard at my side.

OMG – did I forget to talk about the FOOD?

C’mon now, let’s appreciate how beautifully presented this salad and fruit platter are! I know your taste buds are watering right now – sorry! The delicious dinner in true Jamaican style consisted of curry goat, fried chicken and jerk chicken, with rice and peas. For recipes on how you can make these yourself, click here.
